In June 1909 Frederick Handley Page (later Sir) established this company, building a series of monoplanes with crescent-shaped wings inspired by the Austrian designer Jose Weiss. In the First World War the company became well-known through its 0/400 andV/1500 heavy bombers, the former leading to the W8 airliner of 1920, which entered service with Handley Page Air Transport. The Handley H.P.42 / 45 Page HP.42 airliner, which served with Imperial Airways from 1931, set new standards of comfort and safety on British Empire routes. Military bombers were also produced: the Hinaidi, Hyderabad, Heyford and, early in the Second World War, the twin-engined Hampden. Best known was the four-engined Halifax, which shared Bomber Command's offensive against Germany with the Lancaster. After the war the Hastings military transport and its civilian Hermes counterpart went into production, and Handley Page created the crescent-winged Victor "V" bomber. The company's last project before its liquidation in 1970 was the Jetstream twin-turboprop executive transport/feederliner, which was taken over by Scottish Aviation. Back to the letter H
