Barry, 19.11.2015 19:10 Designed by Gustav Lachmann to Air Ministry specification M1 /130 seeking a replacement for the Blackburn Ripon, this aeroplane was beset with problems from the start because of the stringencies of the specification. Essentially all contestants in the competition were unable to meet the performance parameters and stay within a strict weight limit. Only one HP 46 flew and this suffered control problems and whilst it was never going to succeed in it's original concept the Air Ministry were keen to study some of it's weight saving devices. It made it's last flight from Radlett in November 1934. The Air Ministry reluctantly accepted delivery in April 1935 and the machine was delivered to Farnborough by road never to fly again. reply |
