It didn't have a radar installed, I don't know the reason for the side intakes but it certainly didn't have a radar.

Griffon, e-mail, 24.11.2016 17:48

Its a copy of the Mig 19, with a nose mounted radar hence the side intakes. when introduced in the 70's it was the height of 1950s technology. India acquired some aircraft and probably the DPRK.

anyone, e-mail, 27.05.2013 04:33

it looks like a mig 23

X, 01.06.2012 12:31

which one saidit'sMiG-19 BIS?

Sacerno, e-mail, 03.01.2012 00:49

I think people who writes it's a copy of the harrier don't understand so much; harrier has vertical take-off and landing capabilities, while this one hasn't. It's similar to Mig19 like other expert people said.

patinojason54, e-mail, 17.09.2011 08:26

Nanchang (NAMC) Q-5 Fantan is. a version of. BAE Sea Harrier FA2
Jet Fighter Plane...

a.casais, e-mail, 11.12.2010 13:27

That is right, Rosco, the chinese knows very much about recycling and copying.

Air- fan, e-mail, 28.02.2009 01:16

Sorry, my English isn't so good. I have specification the Q-5: He Chinese name is "J-6bis"
Crew-1, Engine-2 x 25,41/37,18kN (25,9/37,9kG)
Empty weight-6200kg, take-off weight-10 700kg
Wingspan- 10,2m lenght-15,25m
Max.speed- ca 1350km/h, ceiling-16 000m, range- 1600km
Armament- 2x30mm cannone, 1000kg of bombs

Rosco, 28.01.2009 13:28

Based on Mig 19 it has kept the wing and tail but it has an revised fuselage, nose an airintake. Hence its heavier then the Mig19(J-6)but due to upgraded elctronics suite it has shorter radius (+/- 500 Km)but it has more armament possibilities (1000kg internal).
It was the first Chinese airplane with nuclear capabilities.
Naval version exists as torpedo bomber and anti ship misile carrier.
Trainer version was proposed in 2005, nothing that the first Q-5 was produced in 1965. Since then it underwent many upgrades to the extend that there is a precision bomber variant with comparable accuracy of the paveway laserguidance system.
that's what recycling is all about.
Pakistan and N-Korea are know clients of Q-5

crazydog, e-mail, 19.08.2008 06:02

It is a supersonic attacker.

Lefranηois, e-mail, 18.05.2008 18:27

The Nanchang Q-5 (NATO reporting name 'Fantan'), also known as the A-5 in its export versions, is a Chinese-built jet ground-attack aircraft based on the Soviet MiG-19. Its main role is close air support.
