| In April 1956 Fokker in the Netherlands concluded an agreement with Fairchild for manufacture of the F27 Friendship then under development in Holland. Thus Fairchild became responsible for production and marketing in North America of the F27 series of aircraft that corresponded to some of those built by the Dutch company. However, when Fokker developed a 'stretched' version known as the F27 Mk 500, Fairchild decided to design its own version with a lengthened fuselage and this was identified as the Fairchild Hiller FH-227.
The FH-227 differed from the standard F27 by having a fuselage 'stretch' of 1.83m to provide accommodation for a maximum of 52 passengers, with increased baggage and cargo space, and by the installation of 1678kW Rolls-Royce Dart RDa.7 Mk 532-7 turboprop engines. The first of two FH-227 prototypes made its initial flight on 27 January 1966. Production of FH-227s and their variants had reached 79 when production ended. About 30 FH-227s of different marks remained in airline service in 1991.

Ron Watts, e-mail, 24.04.2010 01:28 In 1968 I was a passenger on an FH-227, flying from Fayetteville, Arkansas, to Atlanta, Georgia, on an interview trip to the East coast. Night had fallen as we approached Atlanta, and the incredible windows, which extended down to seat level, provided me the most magnificent view of the city I had ever seen before or since. With the wings at the top of the fuselage there was absolutely no impediment to viewing the dazzling display resembling thousand of miniature Christmas tree lights. Even the landing was exceptional, since you seemed to be only six feet above the tarmac, and the impression of speed during landing was truly realistic. I don't remember ever having such a wonderful flying experience, and nothing we have today in the way of passenger jets even comes close. Today you are simply in a tiny metal box with limited or no view and little feeling for what is actually happening outside. The FH-227 is and will always be my favorite passenger airplane of all time. reply | J Mallard, e-mail, 20.01.2010 21:52 www.jetpiedmont.com /gallery /?AC=227 reply | Mike Boyette, e-mail, 20.01.2010 19:38 I flew a corporate version of the F-27 for 4 years, and it is still my favorite aircraft over a career of more than 50 years.
