In 1935 at Göppingen, near Stuttgart, Wolf Hirth founded company named Sportflugzeugbau Schempp- Hirth to build sailplanes. In 1960s company renamed and built the Milan 656 light tourer, also French Piel Emeraude under licence. During early 1960s production of powered aircraft ceased, licence rights for Emeraude being transferred to Binder Aviatik KG. Currently builds large series of gliders and motorgliders in Discus, Janus, Nimbus and Ventus forms.
