Innovative aerodynamic researcher who became interested in rotary-winged flight in 1920s; Anton Flettner's first helicopter made tethered flight in 1932, blades rotated by tip-mounted engines. BMW Bramo Sh14A-powered Fl 184 two-seat gyroplane flown 1935 and, in following year, single-seat experimental Fl 185 helicopter prototype. Flettner Fl 265 with twin intermeshing rotors appeared in 1939 and six were built before production was halted in favor of the Fl 282 Kolibri, first flown in 1941.24 were built.
