Worked for G.D. Convair from 1990 to 1993 (RIFed) I've worked on every section of the MD-11,C&D, E, F&G, and the plugs, loved the job. Too bad San Diego ran them out. Just couldn't do business there. Too expensive.

I had the opportunity to be type rated and fly the MD-11 for World Airways. Great Company and Wonderful airplane. I have flown many airplanes and jets in my career, and the MD-11 was definitely one special airplane. I loved every hour at the controls.......What an Honor!

Stood on the side of the runway when the first one took it's first flight. Worked for DAC at the time and was able to go on board just a day or two before the flight. Beautiful aircraft.

FinnAir Commericial Airline just recently replaced this plane with the Airbus but for a number of years used this plane for its commerical flights around the world.

A reliable plane that served its purpose and was the plane of choice in it's day.

Helped to certify the MD-11 and flew many "first flights" during production. Flew many thousand hours in the aircraft all over the world and it was one of the finest airliners I ever flew. The quietest First Class section of any aircraft! Sure enjoyed my tour with MDAC in Long Beach from 1990-1993.

Ned, I think you mean the PW-4460. The PW-2037 is the engine I flew on the B757. I was in the first class for the MD-11 and flew it for Delta until I retired in 1993. Both were great airplanes. Still flying jets!

The MD11 was also certified with Pratt & Whitney engines. It was the PW 2037.
Some models of the MD11 had higher weights. The passenger version had a TOGW of 618,000 and max landing of 430,000. The cargo was TOGW of 630,500 and landing of 471,500. I flew the American airlines planes with GE engines and the Korean Air with P&Ws.
The max operating altitude was 43,200.

For any of you out there who are Flight Simulator enthusiasts, this plane was modeled to the T from PMDG, and is a blast to set up and fly. A bit complex initially, but well worth it when you finally "get it"

Worked on the prototype. Saw the first one takeoff and made a many first flight for MD in the MD11. Fine airplane to bad we were sold out by John McDonnell. Boeing wanted to sell the 777. That is why this fine wellbuilt airplane was discontinued. Don"t let anyone tell you different.

As much as I want to agree with you, I both built and still maintain the 11, the 777 is a different beast and a better machine. It really pains me to admit that, I still blame Boeing for ending my retirement plans prematurely. I currently maintain both, and enjoy working on both.
