Lockheed C-130 Hercules

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop aircraft that serves as the main tactical airlifter for military forces worldwide. Capable of landing and taking off from short or unprepared runways, it was designed as a troop transport and cargo aircraft, but is now also used for a wide variety of other roles, including airborne assault, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling, aerial firefighting and MEDEVAC. More than 40 different models of the Hercules - including several gunships - are used by more than 50 nations.

The C-130 family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. During more than 50 years of service, the family has established a solid record of reliability and durability, participating in military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations.

I flew the C-130E for AirForce out of McGuire AFB, NJ from 1963 to late summer of 1967. Being a former recip. mech the power of the Herc really impressed me. As am FE & IFE, I initially flew missions to Europe, Africa and West Asia; then at least one, if not two, missions to Nam per month for the better part of three years. Even squeezed in a Resupply to NORD (Danish Weather Station in Upper Greenland)to boot. Have nothing but fond memories of the Herc's durability and stamina. The C-130 series stands as a fitting tribute to Lockheed Aircraft Co.

Took Space-A flights out of Dyess AFB, TX to Pope AFB, NC and NAS Oceana, VA to go visit the in-laws back in the 1981-1983 time frame. My first wife, an AMMO type, asked the flight crew if we could do a tactical lift-off. The pilot flatly refused due to pax (passengers) being onboard. Oh well, she tried!

I flew on the a modle that flew top secret missions out of Germany from 1958 to 1962.I loved the airplane,it had so much power.I guess that is why they extended the fuselauge. There is a history of the recon c-130 that was shot down over Armenia in 1958 in FORT MEADE MD.Our squadron lost 17 crew members. Everyone in the squadron were volunteers. There is a webb site for the squadron(7406supportsquadron.com)check it out...A GREAT SQUADRON.....
