Lockheed C-130 Hercules

The Lockheed C-130 Hercules is a four-engine turboprop aircraft that serves as the main tactical airlifter for military forces worldwide. Capable of landing and taking off from short or unprepared runways, it was designed as a troop transport and cargo aircraft, but is now also used for a wide variety of other roles, including airborne assault, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling, aerial firefighting and MEDEVAC. More than 40 different models of the Hercules - including several gunships - are used by more than 50 nations.

The C-130 family has the longest continuous production run of any military aircraft in history. During more than 50 years of service, the family has established a solid record of reliability and durability, participating in military, civilian and humanitarian aid operations.

I was station at McGuire AFB 1963-1967 assigned to the 1613THoms MATS. This command changed MAC and was changed
438th 0MS. We were newly formed in OCT.1963 and did a number of jobs for the 1611TH Wing. We did not receive
our first C-130 aircraft until the end of Oct.I was assigned to one of the Maintenance docks, and performed 100 hourly post flight inspections and 400 hour post flight inspections. This is a wonderful tactical aircraft.

I was attached to Navy Squadron VR-3 which was based at McGuire AFB, Wrightstown, N.J. We were the last Navy Squadron to work under the Air Force prior to our decommissioning in July, 1967. I Served as Flight Mech, Flight Engineer and Instructor Flight Engineer on the 'E' models which were brand new at the time. Went thru Sewart AFB near Nashville for initial qualification and the entire squadron worked 7 days a week to earn the Combat Qualification as the first C-130 Mats Squadron to earn airdrop certification. My former flying quals in the Navy had me working a 'crew concept' whereby the same crewmen flew together all the time; which was quite a bit different to the 'airline concept' which had different crewmen fly the mission based on their qualifications. No complaints on my part as I enjoyed almost every minute of my flight exposure throughout the AirForce System. In fact, I even flew with an Air Force Crew of a squadron based at McGuire that was short-handed at the time. My time served was between March 1963 and July 1967, with the majority of long distance flights to Nam and back. We all shed a tear when the order came down to disband but it was a wonderful experience and good memories to cherish.

The C-130 has been a "cash cow" and process driver for Lockheed for 60 years, thereby providing the financial base to design, develop and deploy their high-tech military aircraft. This is covered in chapter 2 of my new book.

I was the Flight Engineer on the C-130 that Paul Kline mentioned in El Centro ca. in 1963. Yes we were trying to get to 45,000 ft but could only get to 43,500. The plane was just hanging on the props just above stall speed. The other pilot was capt. Ricky Davidson. I was in the 50th TCS.

I was a parachute rigger for the 1st Special Forces Group at Sikiran, Okonawa, Japan. I packed for and jumped with the HALO group in 1967-68. Most of the jumps were from 12,500' on to Ie Shima. I remember one of the pilots, as he was from Connecticut, and I was from Massachusetts. His name was Ed Sleeper, and he always landed and stopped on the first half of the runway, and the took on the other half. Jumping from the tailgate was a lot of fun, and the island was lovely from 12 grand.
