I was with the 772 Troop Carrier Squadron at Ardmore from 1955 to 1959. We had C-119G until we got C-130A. I was an aircraft radio tech and I remember all the testing that went on across the field with the C-122's making assult landings in the dirt and I mean the dust flew everywhere. I also remember the first C-123's coming to Ardmore. It was a good assignment.

The Chase YC-122 was the basis for the Hiller X-18 tilt wing aircraft. A new wing was built and the fuselage cut and a new midsection added. Turpoprops from the Lockheed and Convair pogos were used.

The Air Force accepted 10 of these aircraft for use as an assault troop carrier. One was totaled at Sewart AFB. The remainder were sent to Ardmore AFB. The aircraft was replaced in 1955 by the new C-123.
