Sikorsky S-31910 |
Virtual Aircraft Museum / USSR / Russia / Sikorsky | |
Completed in late November 1910, the S-3 was similar to the S-2 but with a 40hp Anzani engine, improved ailerons and better wing fabric. Its flying career lasted just over a week, consisting of thirteen flights with a total duration of about seven minutes. The last, on 13 December, ended with an emergency landing on a frozen pond when the distributor vibrated into 'retarded spark' position, power was lost and the S-3 broke through the ice, nose-down in 1.5 meters of water.
