Mikoyan/Gurevich MiG-29

Designed to a 1972 requirement intended to replace the MiG-21, MiG-23, Su-15 and Su-17 with the Soviet air force, the MiG-29, originally revealed in a US satellite photograph and designated 'Ram-L', made its first flight on 6 October 1977. After many design changes the first deliveries of 'Fulcrum As' were made to Soviet Frontal Aviation in 1983 and the type was declared operational early in 1985.

The first hard information became available when the aircraft was examined by Western authorities during an exchange visit to Finland by a MiG-29 unit in 1986. Configured similarly to its F/A-18 Hornet rival, the supersonic and extremely agile MiG-29 has a highly swept (45°) low-mounted wing above twin reheated turbofan engines buried in the fuselage but under the wing. The tail-plane has two vertical and two horizontal stabilisers. A conventional landing gear has twin steerable nosewheels and large single low-pressure mainwheels.

More than 600 MiG-29s are now in service with the former Soviet forces, and the type has been exported to Cuba, Czechoslovakia, East Germany (now serving with the Luftwaffe), Iran, Iraq, North Korea, Poland, Romania, Syria, Yugoslavia and India, where the type is licence-built by Hindustan Aeronautics for the air force as the Baez (Eagle).

The most infamous exploit of the MiG-29 came on February 24, 1996, when two MiG-29s shot down two Cessna 337 Skymaster planes in use with the Cuban exile humanitarian group Hermanos al Rescate (Brothers to the Rescue) that were planning to drop anti-communist leaflets over Havana to sway the Cuban people to rise up against Fidel Castro. Four men were killed in the shootdown (a third Skymaster, piloted by the BTTR founder Jose Basulto, a veteran of the Bay of Pigs invasion, was lucky to escape being downed). The shootdown was deliberate like the KAL Flight 007, because Castro saw the BTTR shootdown as an act of self-defense against supposedly unlawful incursions by Cuban American groups into Cuban airspace. The Trump administration's rushed activation of Title III of Helms-Burton (this action has led to few lawsuits so far) is a long-term consequence of the shootdown, one of the many reasons brought up by most Cuban Americans as to why Fidel Castro should never have been born.

Those American MiG-29s were originally put on the open market by I think Moldovia, and were purchased by the US to keep them from various bad guys ie. Iraq

Prior to the Soviet Union collapsing, the Navy Top Gun School was at Miramar in Ca. They used A-4's and F-5's for the aggressor squadron. Top Gun merged with the Strike Warfare School (bombing) at Fallon Naval Air Station in Northern Nevada. After The Wall fell the Russkies are so broke they'll do or sell anything for a buck. Anybody can go to Fallon and see all the MIG 29's you want on the flight line painted up just like the nasty boys. They put on a public air show once a year and you can see mock dogfights between our best stuff and the Russkies.
Bob Dylan sang it long ago, "Oh The Times They Are A Changin'"
