| The MiG-21 air-superiority fighter was developed on the basis of experience of air combat in the Korean War and eventually became the most widely used fighter in the world. The E-5 prototype flew for the first time in 1955 and the initial production version (NATO Fishbed-A) was built in only limited numbers. Power was provided by a Tumansky R-11 turbo-jet engine rated at 50kN (with after-burning). Armament comprised two 30mm NR-30 cannon. Meanwhile the Soviet Union had developed the K-13 {NATO Atoll) infra-red homing air-to-air missile and two pylons for two K-13 were fitted to the more powerful MiG-21F. The F became known to NATO as Fishbed-C and was a short-range clear-weather fighter (one 30mm cannon only) powered by a 56.4kN (with afterburning) Tumansky R-11

Silver, e-mail, 14.07.2008 09:51 A squadron mate of mine got one shot at one of these in VN. But his Sidewinder didn't a barrel roll around the MIG and it resulted in not kill. Our squadron had a very successful time with the MIG in VN. We five kills and our sister F8 squadron got three or four more. The F8 was the leading MIG Killer in Vietnam during the early days. The MIG-21 was a threat that filled your hands with stick and throttle in the air over VN. reply | Ian Lockhart, e-mail, 22.01.2007 00:30 does any one know how much the R-11 R-13 engines wiegh in KG and there thrust levels in KG reply |
