| Some sources claim that this was a development of the Ju 388,
but it actually was a four-engined long-range bomber, built
of Ju 188, Ju 288 and Ju 388 parts. The development of
the Ju 488 was ordered from manufacturers in occupied France,
who were not very motivated. When the prototype finally neared
completion, it had to be transported to Germany because of the
Allied advance, but before it could be moved it was destroyed by
the French resistance.

Barry, 14.04.2014 14:42 I take your point Brianboro, but this old chestnut about the Maquis driving the Germans out of Paris is not exactly 100%, as if the Nazis had really wanted to hold on they surely would have put up more of a fight. With regard to the Free French forces entering Paris before the Americans, Eisenower let DeGaulle have his day in the sun, but to be quite honest they already new that the "Hun" had left and it was no big deal. Believe me if they had made a fight of it there would be no standing on ceremony. Why did the Germans undertake so much development work in France? Easy if your factories are being bombed day and night and what facilities you have are given over to fighter production of corse you are going to find somewhere else to develop a bomber. reply |

The use of existing components was supposed to make it easier to put into production. Unfortunately, for reasons that defy comprehension, the Germans decided to have the prototype assembled in occupied France, where the workers did everything they could to sabotage the project. reply | ross graham, e-mail, 17.10.2010 23:42 The hierarchy of the Nazi regieme had its priority's wrong, otherwise an aircraft carrier as well as a "Ural Bomber" would have been built. reply |
| Brianboro, e-mail, 01.04.2010 14:05 Luckily for the Allies, many such advanced aircraft such as this never got beyond the prototype or even paper stage. It will still cause much debate among historians as to why the Germans never really developed a workable long range bomber sooner or even pre-war. Apart from the Junkers 290,which was really a martime patrol type, they had nothing longer ranged than the FW 200 Condor or HE 111 series. The Maquis were a force to be reckoned with, especially after D-Day when most unit's came out into the open to play merry havoc with the Enemy, particularly by destroying Enemy facilities & equipment, let us remember,it was the French Resistance that actually liberated Paris,as when Free French troops arrived just ahead of the Americans, they found the city already under the control of French authority. Actions whereby they destroyed such equipment as the prototype Ju 488 are certainly credible to me. reply | Paul Normal, e-mail, 03.12.2009 15:31 under this link u can find a few photos (also of the wreckage!) www.luft46.com /junkers /ju488.html reply | Micheal Walker, e-mail, 26.07.2009 08:59 may I see the picture it would be awesome and I as a historian am intrigued plus the historical knowledge gained would be invauble to me reply | FRANCOIS LAPORTE, 21.03.2008 04:10 WRONG, WRONG, AND ALSO WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS PLANE WAS MADE IN FRANCE IN 1944. IT WAS DESTROYED BY THE FRENCH RESISTANCE. AND I HAVE REAL PROVE, MY GRANFATHER TOLD ME THAT HE WAS IN THE RESISTANCE GROUP THAT DESTROYED THE JU 488 WITH STEN GUNS AND STICKGRENADES AND EGG GRENADES. AFTER THEY DROVE THE GERMANS OUT, HE MANGED TO TAKE A PHOTO OF THE WRECKAGE BEFORE MOVING OUT. ITS NOT THE WELL KNOWN PICTURE TAKEN BY THE GERMANS AFTER TAKING IT BACK, THIS PHOTO COSTS OVER $700,000. THATS HOW RARE THIS PHOTO IS. reply | STEVEN, e-mail, 06.09.2007 18:57 I HAVE HEARD THAT ONE OF THIS AIRCRAFT ( JU 488 ) WAS BUILT SECRETLY IN GERMANY , AND WAS COMPLETE IN THE END OF WW-2. BY THE END OF THE WAR THIS COMPLETED JU-488 WAS CAPTURED BY THE SOVIET RED ARMY IN TEMPLEHOF IN BERLIN. reply |
