The Ju 290 was originally designed as a development of the Ju 90 transport and was test flown in 1941. Subsequent development was undertaken to enable it ultimately to supersede the Fw 200C for long-range over-sea anti-shipping and U-boat cooperation work, but it failed to achieve this. Nevertheless seven versions of the A series were produced as transport (A-1 with BMW 801D engines), reconnaissance (A-2, A-3 and A-5), transport (A-6), reconnaissance-bombing (A-7), and reconnaissance (A-8) aircraft - the latter with provision for carrying two Hs 293 anti-shipping glider missiles. Production totalled about 55 aircraft.

The Ju 290B was a projected heavily armed long-range bomber. It was followed by the Ju 290C reconnaissance and transport aircraft, Ju 290D long-range bomber and Ju 290E night bomber: all of which failed to enter production.

I have just finished reading some documents about the Junkers Ju-290 Tanker refueling aircraft based in Norway during August 1943. It had orders to refuel a Junkers Ju-390 over Iceland on its mission to penetrate Canadian airspace.
This and other reports confirms that a Junkers JU-390 was used for a recon flight over North America in August of 1943.

A very formidable maritime reconnaissance aircraft, far superior to the more famous Focke-Wulf Condor. A version of this aircraft was being developed to be armed with three anti-shipping, guided glider bombs but, fortunately, none of that version were ever deployed operationally. The biggest problem the Luftwaffe experienced with this aircraft was that there were never enough of them. Although first flown in 1941, as a result of politics, bureaucratic infighting and sheer stupidity only 65 were ever built, and those did not become operational over the Atlantic until well into 1943. By then the tide of battle was shifting and the Ju 290s were susceptible to attacks by long-range fighters based in Britain as well as naval fighters based on escort carriers. To make matters worse, after the invasions of France in 1944 these aircraft lost their base on the Atlantic coast.

Two pre-production Ju290A-0 aircraft were followed by five Ju290A-1 armed transports. Two of which were used in an attempted releif of the Stalingrad siege. One crashed on take off with wounded troops on board. Three Ju290A-2 armed maritime reconnaissance models were followed by three Ju290A-3 machines with new Fowke Wulf turrets and BMW 801D engines. The A-4 model of which there were five,differed only in armament spec. The 11 Ju290A-5's had heavier armament, better armour in the cockpit, and better lateral gun positions. A single A-6 was used as atransport and ended it's days in Spain. Of the 25 Ju290A-7's started only a few of this heavier model designed to carry the Hs293 glide missile were completed and none entered service. Minor changes were made on the Ju290A-8, of which two were completed,but again none entered service. However one did survive the war until being scrapped in Czechoslovakia in 1956. Three Ju290A-9's were built for long range maritime reconnaissance. The final model built was the prototype long range heavy bomber the Ju290B-1. The remaining projected models failed to get off the drawing board due to the lack of suitable materials.

drei jahre sp�ter...hallo leo...ich finde deinen einwand ja irgendwie okay, aber wer sagt denn, dass dein name nicht auch zum baustellenpersonal geh�rt??? ich hab die baustelle der ju 390 besucht und dort nur �ber den BULLSHIT den kopf gesch�ttelt. anscheinend verwechseln einige zeitgenossen diese website mit einem rollenspiel und eine art moderne "stille" post...spa� sind anders aus...da k�me ich eher auf die idee, den ganzen bullshit zu l�schen, denn mit dem thema an sich hat dies nichts zu tun!!!

A Ju 290A was flown to the USA and ended up in Marietta Georgia. The C 130 looks more like the 290 than anything kelly johnson ever drew. The 8-290 had the same dropping tail door, cockpit layout and basic operational capability as the YC-130.

Wrong there kiddo! It was impossible for a JU 290 to carry 8000kg of bombs. A more resonable weight was about 2205kg of bombs and was never used over the Battle of Britian or the Blitz. Its perpose was long-range maritime reconnaissance-bomber. And no, there are no 290 in existance.
