| The He 45 was the first of Heinkel's combat aircraft proper for the Third Reich. At the time of its appearance the general practice of using HD designations for Heinkel Doppeldeckers (biplanes) and HE designations for Heinkel Eindeckers (monoplanes) was dropped in favour of He designations.
Appearing in 1931, the He 45 was a two-seat general-purpose biplane powered by a 559kW BMW VI engine. Early production examples were employed mainly as trainers, but subsequent aircraft produced by Heinkel, Gotha,
Focke-Wulf and BFW were used by the Luftwaffe for reconnaissance and light bombing duties. Production totalled 512 aircraft.
