Focke-Wulf Fw 44 Stieglitz

SAF #638, a 44J, was built in Sweden and served in the SAF. In 1973, I and 2 others purchased the plane and began a 7 year restoration. Finished in 1980, I logged about 200 hrs in this, and then sold to my partner. Still flying in CA under U.S. registration N638.

I have a maintenance log for one of these,covering the period 22.7.1941 to 16.5.1944. Werk Nr. 817, aircraft id SE+XD. Anyone know if it still exists?

77 served with the Royal Swedish Air Force from 1936 as primary trainers. 28 were built by Focke-Wulf, the balance in Sweden, 10 at ASJA, 10 at SAAB and 29 at CVV(Airforce Workshops at Västerås). They were superseded in the training role towards the end of WW2 by Klemm KL35 and Bücker Bü181, being dispersed throughout the RSwAF as liason aircraft. Later they were handed over to civilian aeroclubs and used largely for aerotowing gliders. This heavy use means that there are very few left today, I don't know of any airworthy in Sweden.

As noted this aircraft was powered by the Siemens Sh14A, except for the 'C' and 'E' models which were powered by the Argus 8B engine. The performance and specification of all models were very similar.

Flew airshows and expos. for 7 years against the 44 in a Fleet Finch. I always won because he had a smoke system and I did not. Good plan!
The 44 and Fleet are both still in the Brownsville Texas CAF hanger.

40 of this airplanes were built in Brazil in late 30's by Brazilian Navy Factory. Two are preserved in Brazilians museums, but those were built in Argentina.
