| Developed from the G.II of 1913, the G.III was a two-seat sesquiplane powered by a 59.6kW Le Rhone, Gnome or Anzani engine mounted in the nose of the short crew nacelle. Originally operated by French squadrons as reconnaissance aircraft over the Western Front and then in less dangerous theatres of war, the G.III subsequently became a trainer, serving also with the British, Belgian, Italian and American forces.

It's hard to believe from it's appearance, but this was actually a very good airplane: sturdy, stable, easy to fly and efficient. However like most pre-WW-I designs, it suffered from a lack of speed, maneuverability and poor crew placement (the pilot was seated behind the observer, who had a limited view and field of fire). Nevertheless, it was a successful reconnaissance plane early in WW-I, as well as a good training airplane throughout the war. reply | |
