Barry, 11.01.2011 18:31 2400 Beauforts were produced of which 700 were manufactured in Australia which could be identified by having a larger fin. The difficulty of shipping the Taurus engine to Australia led to the RAAF aircraft being fitted with 1200 h.p. Pratt and Whitney Twin Wasp engines which were locally produced. In fact some U.K. Beauforts had this engine and the MkII was even fitted with Rolls Royce Merlin engines before reverting to the more than capable Taurus. Please note I think there is an error in the dimensions noted above in that the wing span should be 57ft 10in and the length 44ft 2in. In addition most sources quote the rangr as being 1600 miles. reply | james, e-mail, 27.12.2008 12:38 We in brisbane have some people trying to put one of these back into the air for the joy of others who have not seen one in the air since the 1940's reply | EMBER, e-mail, 18.12.2007 04:10 A VALUED, HARD-WORKING MACHINE, THE BEAUFORT WAS CAPABLE OF DELIVERING 55% OF IT'S BOMBS ON TARGET ;HOWEVER, IT WAS NIGH PROTECTED AND MANY FELL VICTIM TO MESSERSCHMIT BF-109Es & Fs. reply |
